Dr. Ruth McDermott is a light artist & academic (UNSW Foundation Studies) who has a PhD in design from the University of Technology, Sydney. Her practice is based around site specific lighting installations in collaboration with Ben Baxter for commercial clients such as Myer Department store and Woods Bagot architects and public festivals such as VIVID in Sydney (total of 10 pieces), Wellington LUX, Canberra Enlighten, Globelight in Melbourne and Luminale in Germany. In 2022, UTS ePress published a book on their 13 years of light art practice available as a download or print on demand. In this presentation, Ruth focuses on the creative and logistical challenges of a major light installation for Willoughby City Council for Chinese New Year, 2024, and “Torrent”, an earlier installation.
